Iodine is essential for the proper function of the thyroid gland. Hormones produced by the thyroid gland are critical for the development of the nervous system, reproductive organs, heart, lungs and skin.
A shortage in iodine supply significantly impacts foetal development. A deficiency at this critical time can lead to poor bone growth, delayed central nervous system development, abortions and produce small, weak animals
that are unable to suckle.
